Never bet more than you can afford to lose

Gambling is not a reliable income stream and should not be viewed as such, markets are often set in favour of the house in order to make it increasingly tough to be profitable. There is a reason why there are so few professional bettors and tonnes of bookmakers.

BeGambleAware states: “The venue is using gambling to make money. It’s not designed the other way around. Over time you will give away more money than you receive! Think of gambling as an entertainment expense - just like buying a movie ticket.”

It is important to maintain the right mindset when gambling, to understand that it is very difficult to achieve sustained profits over the long term, and to never bet more than you can afford to lose. Set yourself limits as a precursor to gambling, that way you can create a safe line that you will not cross. If you do not do this then you are more likely to get sucked in and lose track of how much money you have spent, and potentially lost.

BeGambleAware states: “Gamble within your weekly entertainment budget, not with your phone bill or rent budget… “Decide how much you can afford to lose before you go to play. When it’s gone - it’s over! If you win, you’ve been lucky, but don’t be disappointed if your luck doesn’t continue.”

You should not be gambling with anymore than 2.5-3% of your weekly income, increasing the risk in a bet is dangerous and can lead to negative repercussions down the line. It is a bit of fun, not something to rely on.

When the fun stops stop, make sure you are feeling well and have a clear head when it comes to placing a bet. Otherwise you are much more likely to make ill advised decisions with your hard earned money, you will gamble more sensibly and responsibly when emotions are not running high. BeGambleAware states: “Good judgment stands as your main line of defence against letting gambling get out of control.” Do not jeopardise your financial stability by making rash decisions, if you are not feeling 100%, do not bother.

If gambling becomes a regular activity, make sure you take breaks before the problem develops, you need to strike the right balance. BeGambleAware states: ‘If gambling becomes your only form of entertainment, it’s unlikely that you’re still just gambling for the fun of it, and your gambling may even be a problem. Make sure gambling isn’t your only pastime.”

To reiterate, gambling is for entertainment purposes, a bit of fun. If it becomes anything other than that, you should consider quitting or at least taking a break. It can be easy to become addicted to gambling, following this advice gives you the best chance of ensuring gambling is an enjoyable and responsible experience.
